Aurélie Garon

                            STATEMENT

Her work tries to draw up the outlines of our presence in the world. The world itself. Its chaos.
It is about the states of consciousness, the Invisible World and the perception of the visible.
She has a taste for the exploration of human  psyche and its craks, its zones of opacity. Violence through different forms is implicit in her works.

Her research essentially takes shape through sound and video, sometimes in drawing and photographs.
 Currently fiction film
Her works, in different forms, all gravitate towards this attempt to create an understanding of what is real. Her work expresses our raw contingency in the midst of this world and the resistance to reality. Her videos and/or purely sound installations infer a feeling of remoteness from the real. We can find a feeling of distress and of suspense in my work. This distress takes form in the tension that exists in Man’s relationship with the World.
In her works, she introduces very small changes and shifts in perception, so that the audience feels a sense of disturbance between space and time. For example, my sound installation: "Deux droites parallèles se rejoignent à l'infini" ("Two parallel lines meets at infinity") is created solely from voices which come out of the dark and which recount dreams filled with worry and stories about invisible worlds. These are personal experiences, which have a universal dimension. This is a way of speaking about a human reality (in specific time and space) and to give it form. So, a certain degree of tension can be seen and/or heard in my installations. It is this tension, which shifts reality towards the different, “sometimes intangible” strata, which make up this reality. My sound and visual piece in 3 parts "On ferait mieux de parler d’aveugles tout court" ("Wouldn’t it be better to simply talk about the blind?") is a slow retinal experience that disappears into a harsh sound experience, with only one voice emerging out of the darkness at the end. In my sound and video installation "C’est un bruit qui est là, qui permet de respirer on dirait..." ("It is a noise which is there, which enables one to breathe, it would seem..."), the audience finds itself in a dark room; a suspended screen mysteriously levitates in the space. This screen shows two men who fight and grip each other, until they fall into a trance like state. A vinyl record on a turntable-like “machine” sets off a short-film, which is repeated in a loop. The sound comes directly from the record on the “machine”. Over the period of the exhibition, this sound changes dramatically as the record wears out. The wearing down of the record also changes the projected image. The repetition of the visual and sound refrain generated by the machine (whose turntable turns from the centre outwards), eventually creates a feeling of vertigo.

Her work tries to represent a feeling of distance from reality. She uses different media and tools to attempt to give this distance a form, and it appears through the feeling of remoteness from the real. This feeling gives a clearer understanding of what is real.

Her research currently takes  shape around fiction film. Her short film Floaters (coproduction Le Fresnoy) carries the outline of all the concerns to which she has given a form over the past years, be it through videos, installations, sound pieces, drawings and photographs. Floaters is the logical continuation of an artistic path already engaged for several years.
